Community Policing Congregations United for Neighborhood Action (CUNA) led a campaign to modernize policing in Allentown, Pennsylvania. CUNA leaders researched best practices among cities, visited model programs such as the CitiStat initiative in Baltimore and convinced their city government to adopt community policing as a citywide crime prevention strategy. The organization helped bring new police leadership to the city, pressed for a $1 million federal grant to upgrade computer technology and won Spanish speaking 911 operators to respond to the growing Latino population.
Juvenile Justice Reform Federation of Congregations United to Serve (FOCUS) in Orlando won support from the State Legislature and the Governor of Florida to provide $750,000 annually to fund a pilot program of the Orange County Sheriff to reduce the ratio of juvenile probation officers to juvenile offenders from 1 for 125 to 1 to 25. The Juvenile Assessment and Monitoring (JAM) program has reducing repeat youth offenders by 80%. FOCUS also helped establish a cooperative agreement between Orlando Police and Department of Juvenile Justice to refer first-time offenders to counseling and community service.
Nuisance Abatement All Congregations Together (ACT) in New Orleans brought thousands of people together to ask their Mayor and District Attorney to write new state legislation designed to make it easier for communities to close down nuisance businesses. Working with five other PICO organizations in the state through Louisiana Interfaith Together (LIFT) ACT persuaded the State Legislature to pass legislation which has helped reduce open drug dealing and prostitution from residential neighborhoods.
