Over the past few weeks, three more members of the Los Angeles City Council have signed a pledge with PICO affiliate L.A. Voice in support of a four-point plan to provide more affordable housing for the people of Los Angeles. City Councilmembers Jose Huizar, Richard Alarcon, and Janice Hahn became the seventh, eighth, and ninth councilmembers to sign the pledge, signifying that a majority of the city's 15 councilmembers now support the plan.
In July 2007, in front of over 1,000 community members, Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti signed a pledge with L.A. Voice to develop new city policies on housing, including funding for a Housing Trust Fund, more mixed-income housing, and protections for renters to increase the quantity and quality of low-income housing in the city. Over the past year, leaders with L.A. Voice have been working to develop further support on the council. With 9 of 15 councilmembers now in support, L.A. Voice plans to work with the Mayor to bring legislation before the council.
