The state's decision to takeover Pointe Coupee Central High School in New Roads, Louisiana and convert it to a charter school has caused uproar across Point Coupee Parish. Many parents and community members have felt left out and uninformed about the decision to convert the county's only high school to a charter school.
With such uncertainty and division swirling around Point Coupee, PICO's new affiliate Faith United for Empowering Leadership (FUEL) decided to organize a community research forum with the Superintendent and representatives from Advance Baton Rouge, the charter school network that will take over Point Coupee Central.
Over 250 community members attended the event, where parents and community members got a chance to have their questions addressed about their children's education. The forum was a clear signal to the school district and Advance Baton Rouge about the importance of collaborating with parents and community members around decisions that affect their children's quality of education.
