Orlando families work to preserve Head Start
Federation of Congregations United to Serve (FOCUS)

Over 300 people met at John Calvin Presbyterian Church in Orlando to protect Head Start from threatened changes in federal law. The 40-year-old program in Orange County, FL serves more than 1,500 families and is ranked one of the 17th best in the country, but it could face big changes if Congress decides to block grant Head Start. Parents and clergy from Orlando FOCUS are concerned that a block grant would weaken standards and funding for the program. County officials agreed to recommend continued funding of the County's $1.4 million portion of the cost of Head Start and to work with FOCUS leaders to communicate to Federal and State legislators the need to keep the high standards that have long characterized the program.
