Metro Organizations for People (MOP) is pressing the Denver Public Schools to reconsider a school closing plan that has been criticized by educators and parents for not guaranteeing a better education to students whose schools are slated for closure. MOP has worked with parents, teachers and community members to develop an alternative proposal that provides adequate time and planning for opening new schools to be successful. MOP proposals include opening new schools grade-by-grade after more deliberate planning; insuring that children transfered out of closed schools are being sent to higher performing schools; and allowing funding to follow students to new schools using a transparent, equitable formula. MOP has a long history of working to engage parents in efforts to bring about systemic instructional change in the Denver Public Schools.
