Ninety members of Congregation Sha'ar Zahav and other San Francisco Organizing Project (SFOP) member congregations gathered June 18th to call on Director of the Department of Public Health Dr. Mitch Katz and San Francisco County Supervisor Bevan Dufty to commit to a timeline for completing the rollout of Healthy San Francisco (HSF), the city's innovative program designed to make health care services accessible and affordable to uninsured San Francisco residents.
Two years ago, Congregation Sha'ar Zahav laid out a bold vision for comprehensive health care coverage in San Francisco, a vision that helped pave the way for the creation of Healthy San Francisco in 2007. Originally limited to people making $31,000 per year or less, there has been no timeline for when others could expect to be included in the program until SFOP began calling for one.
Public health officials have committed to allowing people earning up to 500 percent of the federal poverty level to enroll beginning in February 2009, and estimate that all San Francisco residents will be able to begin applying in the summer of 2009.
