Over 1,000 turn out in Denver for Comprehensive Immigration Reform

Immigration Reform

Metro Organizations for People (MOP), January 15, 2010

Denver, CO -- Over 1,000 Denver residents attended a town hall meeting on January 13 at Manual High School in Denver, Colorado to show their support for passing Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR) in 2010.

PICO affiliate Metro Organizations for People (MOP) organized the event, in coordination with the Reform Immigration for America Campaign and nearly a dozen other Colorado-based organizations.

U.S. Senator Michael Bennet attended the town hall, which was one of many happening across the country this January, leading up to President Obama's State of the Union address where he will layout legislative priorities for 2010.  Immigration reform proponents want to ensure that CIR is one of the top priorities. Organizations throughout the United States are urging Obama to keep his promise to help pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform, which he promised to address during his first year in office.

Other guests who attended included State Senator Michael Johnston, State Representative Joe Miklosi, and Denver City Council Members Doug Linkhart, Paul Lopez, and Rick Garcia.

At the meeting, members of the Denver Board of Education, as well as a representative from both the State House of Representatives and Senate, agreed to sponsor resolutions in support of CIR before March 31.  In addition, three Denver city council members agreed to sponsor a proclamation in support of CIR. A MOP youth leader shared with the audience her own testimony of the challenges she faces in attaining higher education due to the nation's broken immigration system.

The event was organized by PICO affiliate Metro Organizations for People, Reform Immigration for America, Colorado Progressive Coalition, Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, Service Employees International Union, Democracia USA, Padres and Jovenes Unidos, American Friends Service Committee, Rights for All People and the Colorado Catholic Conference; about 1000 community and religious leaders
