San Jose mourns loss of Reverend Mary Parker-Eves
It is with deep sadness that I write to let you know that our beloved Reverend Mary Parker-Eves passed away on Friday, February 4, 2005. It has been a great shock, as many of us had been with her recently, in just the past few days or weeks, and she was her usual strong, full-of-life self. Mary was the bedrock of San Jose PACT's faith leaders caucus for years, leading our work to expand and become inter-faith, and she's been central to PACT's recent growth, showing the way to many other pastors, particularly her United Methodist brothers and sisters. Mary fought for justice and spoke truth to power -- whether advocating for health care for all children in Santa Clara County or as a faith leader at PICO's recent clergy press conference in Washington, D.C., launching the New Voices Campaign. I was blessed to work along side Mary when she was the co-chair of PACT a couple of years ago. Mary was simply always there, always reliable, when we needed her. She led an exemplary life and leaves an extraordinary legacy. We miss her dearly.
Mary was the pastor of Alum Rock United Methodist Church. Her husband is Parr Eves, and she has two grown children, Karen and Sean. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2005, at 3 p.m., at Alum Rock United Methodist Church, 30 Kirk Avenue, in San Jose. From Interstate 280 or 101 in San Jose, take the Alum Rock exit and go east, past Capitol and White Road, until you come to the light at Kirk Ave. Turn left at Kirk, and the church will be on your right.
