Our Priorities
The United States stands at the crossroads of an historic moment. With crisis after crisis buffeting America from all sides -- foreclosures, unemployment, stagnant wages, the failing financial sector -- there has never been a more urgent time to reform healthcare, one of the largest expenses for America's families and a rapidly rising cost for businesses.
Healthcare has become one of the biggest sources of injustice in our country with millions of Americans unable to access care and others faced with enormous healthcare bills. The many faith traditions represented in PICO call us to have a vision for the future, a vision that includes access to affordable, quality healthcare for our children and grandchildren. With the growing healthcare crisis, now is the time to make these tough choices to provide strong and meaningful reform.
After a successful two-year campaign to expand health coverage to uninsured children, PICO National Network is prepared to help organize the faith community to build bipartisan support for comprehensive healthcare reform this year guided by the following priorities:
- Health care reform needs to provide families with quality health insurance choices that are truly affordable regardless of income;
- Reform needs to cover everyone, so that no person relies on an emergency room for their health care or delays treatment because they lack insurance or have been denied coverage;
- Reform needs to protect and enhance the health of lower-income families and children by strengthening Medicaid and SCHIP; and
- Reform needs to rest on a financially sustainable foundation, providing people with the care they need when they need it and controlling costs.
PICO will take the following actions to ensure that healthcare reform moves forward over the coming months:
- Organize our network of 1,000 congregations to hold public events and communicate regularly with our Members of Congress about the need for comprehensive reform, including a Faith and Families Economic Recovery Summit in D.C. on March 10 with 300 PICO leaders from across the country.
- Coordinate with national religious denominations and faith-based organizations to bring a strong faith voice into the national healthcare debate. There exists widespread support in religious communities for healthcare reform, support that spans the range of political affiliation. PICO is working to bring this unified voice into the debate.
- Bring a human face to the healthcare debate by lifting up the healthcare stories of our members and people of faith. PICO seeks to keep the focus of the debate on the impact on the everyday people in our pews.
